Can high levels of oxygen in an incubator cause bad eye sight?
When I was born i had a hard time breathing and i was put in an incubator, I have had bad eye sight since about 1 (no joke). I don’t really have an explanation for why my Eyesight is bad, while trying to find out why it could be so bad i stumbled across the thought that to much oxygen in a baby’s eyes can cause damage. Is it possible? What reasons could they be bad? (other than genetics…)
Yes high levels of oxygen at the wrong time can cause poor vision. Do a search for “retrolental fibroplasia” or “retinopathy of prematurity”.
Retinopathy of prematurity is a bilateral retinopathy typically occurring in premature infants treated with high concentrations of oxygen, characterized by vascular dilatation, proliferation, tortuosity, edema, retinal detachment, and fibrous tissue behind the lens.
There was a time when they gave premature babies too much oxygen not realizing this would interfer with the proper development of the eye resulting in an incomplete absorption of vessels behind the lens that will result in fibrous tissue remaining that interferes with vision.
